It is true that pets bring us many joys; they are faithful friends that most often are regarded as family members. But sometimes they can be the source of some unpleasant incidents related especially to their odor.
Luckily, we have at our disposal a very simple and very effective secret weapon: it's the ordinary baking soda. Also known as sodium bicarbonate, baking soda is typically used as a baking ingredient. However, due to its alkaline composition, baking soda can be used successfully to fight against acid odors from cats and dogs and for home cleaning.
Important notice: do not let your pet ingest baking soda! In large quantities, it can cause heart problems so it's better to keep sodium bicarbonate away from your pets.
Removing odors from your carpets
In case of an unfortunate accident involving your dog (or cat) and your carpet, you can use baking soda to get rid of the unwanted odors. Start by cleaning up the mess from the "crime scene", then sprinkle some baking soda all over the stain surface and brush the powder into the carpet fibers. Let it act for a few hours (it's better to leave it overnight to react) and keep your dog away from the place in question. Use a vacuum cleaner to remove the baking soda, then clean the spot with a carpet shampoo (if possible, use a steam carpet cleaner for better results).
For stubborn stains, you could try first to mix water and white vinegar in equal parts, then use a sponge or a cloth to dab the stain with the liquid. Afterwards, use baking soda as described before.
Cleaning your dog's fur
Due to its ability to neutralize odors, and the fact that it's non-skin irritating, sodium bicarbonate is very effective for freshening up your dog's fur. In order to make your dog's hair soft and shiny, add some baking soda to the water in his bath (three tablespoons per liter of water).
If your dog favours dry baths, you can sprinkle baking soda on the fur then rub it gently. Use a brush in order to remove the powder from the fur. This simple procedure will help keep the odors under control.
Odors from litter boxes, baskets and pet toys
You can also use baking soda to annihilate the odors from your cat's litter box. To avoid the development of unpleasant odors from the cat litter, simply sprinkle a layer of baking soda in the bottom of the box before pouring the litter. In the same manner, once in a while you could pour a handful of baking soda over the litter.
In order to freshen up the covers of your dog's basket, add 50 grams of baking soda to the detergent you use to wash up the covers.
If you want to clean your pet's plastic toys, just immerse them in a solution of two tablespoons (50 grams) of baking soda in one liter of water, then rub them with a sponge and rinse with running water. In the case of cloth toys, sprinkle them with baking soda. Let the powder act for at least two hours, then use a brush to remove the powder from the toy.
